A former senator’s son has been arrested
and remanded in prison following his involvement
in robbery in Abuja.
Police sources told Vanguard that the former
senator’s son, who hails from Ekiti State, led a
gang of armed robbers to rob a Colonel (names
withheld) at Mbora Estate by Jabi District, where
his AK-47 and other valuable items were removed.
The source disclosed that the robbery operation
which took place on the July 5, 2013, resulted in
the arrest of the ex-senator’s son whose name
was given as Ola Kila.
The source said in the process of investigation
operatives from the Special Anti Robbery Squad,
SARS, working on a tip-off subsequently arrested
Ola Kila and while a search was conducted in his
house around Life Camp area, Abuja, 16 live
cartridges and some other incriminating exhibits
were recovered from the suspect’s house.
During interrogation, it was discovered that the
suspect allegedly belong to a notorious armed
robbery gang that has been terrorizing the FCT
and its environs.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that his
friend, an Igbo boy whom he knew to be a
member of a robbery gang brought the gun and
the cartridges to his house and that the boy has
gone back to the East with the intention of
bringing more arms and ammunitions.
Ola Kila, however, denied participating in the
robbery attack on the Lt. Colonel’s house at Mbora
Estate on the day in question.
He confirmed however, that the said Ibo boy
brought two laptops robbed at gun point to him,
which he sold in the GSM Village, Abuja.
He also alleged that the said Ibo boy robbed a
man at Life Camp and shot him sometimes in May
this year.
The suspect and another member of his gang
were last week charged for false information at
Area Magistrate court, Karu by the magistrate who
ordered that they be remanded at Keffi and
Nasarawa State Prisons.

ASUU Strike 2013 Latest News Update: Nigerian Student Appeals To University Lecturers To Agree With FG

August 26, 2013 – ASUU Strike 2013 Latest
News Update: Nigerian Student Appeals To
University Lecturers To Agree With FG
The threat to academic stability in the nation’s
ivory towers because of the current strike by the
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has
attracted headlines in the dailies. The media has
also been awashed by many criticisms, most of
which have been directed at the Federal
Government in which President Jonathan is the
representational character. However, it appears
many of the critics have failed to consider the
other side of the coin, which is one of the
essentials in a debate on such a controversial
issue.
Therefore, the focus of this piece is to examine
the purpose of the present ASUU’s strike and their
sympathizers’ rage against the FG. Firstly, ASUU
came up with the issue of autonomy for
universities. The FG approved the idea of
autonomy so long as the universities would
generate internal revenue to offset their
expenditure, including salaries and allowances.
This government’s position provoked ASUU
members.
They poured venom on the government for
merely supporting the idea of autonomy –
existence as an independent body! Having
realized the illusion surrounding university
autonomy, members of the academic union
played down their demand. This raises a question
on the sincerity of ASUU’S demands.
On the issue of Federal Government’s assistance
to state universities, this writer supports the idea
of assisting the state universities. But must the
Federal Government be compelled to render
support to universities established and owned by
state governments? Methink helping state
universities should be as necessary as the state
governments are required to support the federal
institution located in their domain. Needless to say
that state governments collect tenement tax from
federal institutions sited in their states.
The idea of compelling the federal government to
offer help to state-owned universities is borne out
of the fact that academic staff from state
universities are also part of ASUU. The truth must,
however, be told. The Visitors to state universities
are the state governors. Academic and non-
academic staff of state-owned universities are
employees of the state governments. Compelling
the FG to assist state universities no doubt
negates the principle of federalism. It only brings
to fore the over dependence of constituents on the
government at the centre.
The progressive increase of education budget to
26% between 2009 and 2020 is another
contentious issue in the 2009 FG/ASUU
agreement. The agitation for increase to 26% in
budgetary allocation, as recommended by
UNESCO for developing nations, is a legitimate
one. So there is need to improve the current 8%
total budget to education by the FG.
However, while the FG should be chastised for its
current 8% budget to education, one needs to
remind discerning readers that in nations where
huge budgetary allocations are committed to
education, members of the academia engage in
scholarly research that help to solve societal
needs. Only a few of our academics engage in
fruitful research capable of solving the needs of
our society. Most of the university teachers set
their target in journal publication that would help
them gain promotion in their academic career
even when such is far from rendering solution to
our societal needs.
Akin to increase in budgetary allocation is the
issue of earned academic allowances for
university teachers. Allowances are stimulants
that reinforce positive inclination towards work.
While government is working out modalities to
pay earned academic allowances to deserving
university teachers, the Dr. Fagie led ASUU is
kicking against such, insisting that allowances
should be paid across board, even when not all
lecturers merit such allowances.
My experience as an undergraduate and post-
graduate student in one of the first generation
universities showed that not all university
lecturers deserve mention in the earned
allowance, particularly the absentees. It is an
open secret that some of the lecturers who are
fulltime employees in the federal universities
abandon their duty posts to shuttle between
federal and private universities. They stagger their
responsibilities in multiple roles as lecturers–in-
charge in both public and private universities
sacrificing quality of delivery in the process, at the
expense of unsuspecting students in public
universities.
These ‘abroad’ lecturers hardly attend classes to
teach in the public universities. When they return,
mostly towards the end of the semester, they
engage the students in lengthy, patchy lecture
hours in a bid to cover a course work that ought to
have been concluded before the time of exams.
Any student who dare challenges lecturer’s
absenteeism in public universities are often
victimized with a threat of carry-over of the
course handled by the lecturer or delay in
graduation.
At the post-graduate level, the situation is even
more unpalatable. Many post-graduate students
fail to complete their programmes in line with the
academic calendar due to lecturers’ negligence.
They hardly spend quality time to guide and
mentor their students in their long essays. With
this domineering posture, a percentage of the
students either incur extra year(s) or abandon
their programmes out of frustration. If you would
not grow grey hair while undertaking a Ph.D
degree as a student, you have to not only be hard
working in your research pursuit, but also be
willing to worship the deified characters in
lecturer’s garb! Let me add here that a
considerable number of the lecturers have passion
for their calling. Those ones always act right by
performing their duties without compromising
standard; they deserve their earned allowances
and should be rightly rewarded.
The influx of private universities became more
pronounced during the regime of ex-president
Olusegun Obasanjo. Yet, thousands of university
applicants seeking admission could not either gain
admission into the universities or afford the luxury
of high fee demands of the private universities. In
fulfilling his campaign promises in 2011, President
Jonathan established nine federal universities and
further established three to make it twelve. The
establishment of federal universities provided
succour to admission seeking candidates. Besides
providing admission to deserving applicants, it
also signaled a massive employment into the
education sector. Jonathan will go into the history
books as one whose regime established most
federal universities in a single tenure.
The prolonged quagmire and the sit tight approach
of ASUU members are having devastating effects
on Nigerian students, undergraduates and post-
graduates. The rot in the education sector as
claimed by ASUU should not be further fertilized
by ASUU’s hard-line posture. The standstill caused
by ASUU/FG impasse could have been resolved if
only ASUU and FG would shift ground and make
concession, at least for the sake of the students
who bear the brunt of the face-off.
Already, the Federal Government has made a
spirited effort to get the striking lecturers back to
work. The government recently released a
whopping 130billion naira in response to ASUU’s
demand for infrastructural development in public
universities.
According to the Secretary to the Federal
Government, Anyim Pius Anyim, 100billion naira is
for infrastructural development, while the
remaining 30billion naira has also been disbursed
as part of FG’s attempt to defray the backlog of
the earned allowances.
That means the federal government has shifted
ground in this regard, so what is ASUU waiting for?

#BBATheChase Review: Who Do You Think Is Likely To Win The $300,000 Prize?

They were 28 housemates, now just 5
housemates remain, still chasing the grand prize
of $300,000 – a whooping N48million naira!!
Beverly – Nigeria,
Cleo – Zambia
Dillish – Namibia
Elikem – Ghana
Melvin – Nigeria
Which of these housemates do you think is
having the upper hand of going home with the
cash?
TuaseFemi thinks Elikem will win, and here’s
why he thinks so:
As for me Elikem of Ghana is most likely to win
the prize. My reason being that there are two
Nigerians among them. This will
divide Nigerians’ votes.
And for the fact that Nigeria has won it 2 or 3
times, this might attract sympathy from other
West African countries to vote for the
Ghanaian Elikem.
Do you agree?

Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo's Reply To Ese Walter's Sex Scandal

It was an atmosphere of artificial crowd and
artificial shouting in COZA, OluFamous.Com
observed, as the man in the eye of the storm,
Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo mounted the pulpit during
Sunday service to REACT to what you all have
been reading about him in the social media.
Artificial crowd in the sense that Pastor Biodun
himself admitted that many of those present in
church were not the usual faces he used to
see. And here is what Pastor Biodun said:
"I'm sure you read somethings about me in the
social network. I've been receiving calls from
different people even big people in
government... They have been advising me;
'don't talk, we understand'.
Read my lips: Because I know that there are
people here that are not part of us:
We are going to speak but we are consulting.
We'll come out with a robust reply .....but for
now...we ask God he said 'don't talk'.... My
destiny is not in anybody's hands..."
He also said something like people are trying to
bring him down because he is building a new
church:
"Brethren, no one will see our new church building
site and not want to bring us down."
It's kind of sad that Pastor Biodun could not
BOLDLY deny this sex story. What is really going
on?

Obasanjo Knows Of Jonathan’s One-Term Pact; President Now Begging Him To Deny

The 5 northern states governors opposed to the
plan by President Goodluck Jonathan to run for
another term in 2015 have said that former
President Olusegun Obasanjo was very much
aware that Jonathan indeed agreed to serve for
only one term, after spending two years of Yar-
Adua's Administration.
“We are impressed with the report that Dr
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has already taken a
unique and unprecedented step of declaring
that he would only want to be a one-term
president. If so, whether he knows it or not,
that is a sacrifice and it is statesmanly.
"Rather than vilify him and pull him down, we
as a party should applaud and commend him
and Nigerians should reward and venerate him.
He has taken the first good step; let us
encourage him to take more good steps to
achieve what we need to achieve for this
country by voting for him in landslide victory as
the first elected president of Nigeria on basis of
our common Nigerian identity and for the
purpose of actualising the Nigerian dream. God
bless you all."
According to the governors, Obasanjo had stated
this at the grand finale of the PDP presidential
campaign in March 2011, while acknowledging the
one-term pact.
The governors who are elected on the platform of
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have
therefore urged Obasanjo to speak out on the
matter, insisting that Jonathan in 2011 had a pact
with the north not to seek re-election after his first
term in office.
The governors are Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Rabiu
Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Murtala Nyako
(Adamawa), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Muazu
Babangida Aliyu (Niger).
A source close to one of the governors said the
lingering crisis in the PDP has continued unabated
because Obasanjo has kept silent over the
controversial one-term pact Jonathan allegedly
entered into prior to his emergence as the PDP
presidential candidate in 2011.

Paulinho almost quit after racist abuse

Quoted by a number of British newspapers, including
the Sunday Telegraph, the Brazil midfielder, who this
summer cost Spurs £17 million from Corinthians,
said he came close to hanging up his boots after his
first stint in European football was tainted.
It was while playing in Lithuania with FC Vilnius and
then in Poland with LKS Lodz that he became the
subject of racist taunts that forced him to return
home to Brazil to weigh up how he would provide for
his wife, Barbara, and his young daughter if his
football career was already at an end.
“There were two games when I went out to play, the
fans were making monkey noises and throwing coins
at me and I just thought: ‘I don’t need to tolerate
this.’ So I made the decision to move on,” Paulinho
said.
“I just felt I didn’t need to do something that put me
in those kinds of situations. I felt a responsibility
towards my mum and dad and I spoke an awful lot
with my wife.
“She mentioned that my parents had always backed
me and that they always did everything for me and
that I should return to football to fight for what they
had given me.
“If I had left football I would not have had anything.
The reality was that as I remained at home I could
not think of anything that could replace it.”
Paulinho rebuilt his career back in Brazil and has
now risen to a prominent position in their national
team, as well as securing a move to the Premier
League.
“I looked at the other offers this summer, but came
to the conclusion that Tottenham would be the right
one for me because of the team, because of the
environment and the league and also the other
players who I would be playing alongside,” he
added.
“The main aim for me and for the other players at
Tottenham is to really aim for titles this season.
Tottenham is a big club and we have great players
here so we should be aiming for the top.”

Wenger: Suarez key in transfer plans

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger conceded his bid to
sign Suarez from Liverpool was doomed to fail
earlier this week, but has now admitted his hopes of
landing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema may
depend on his former target securing a move to the
Bernabeu.
When asked whether he felt Suarez moving to Real
Madrid was crucial to his hopes of landing the
France international, a guarded Wenger offer this
response: “That's part of the fact you need three
agreements for anybody,” he stated.
“It’s true that it is sometimes connected with other
clubs, but we have to accept that.”
However, if Madrid do lure Suarez to the Spanish
capital, it would be another blow against Wenger’s
ability to court a highly-rated player into a fruitful
relationship with the club.
“That can happen (a players joins another club).
You've certainly tried to go out with a girl but find
she has chosen someone else. You don't commit
suicide,” he said.
“I don't want to speak in detail about what has
happened. One day, why not?
“But now it's not the moment to talk about that. I
just said it's over. We have to get on with our lives.”
Meanwhile, Wenger claimed he has a queue of
players lining up to sign for the club, as he looks to
make good on his promises to spend big in the final
week of the transfer window.
Wenger stated he has been frustrated by his failure
to land a host of top targets this summer, yet he
insists the desire of some of the game’s leading
lights to join the Gunners burns brighter than ever.
However, the Frenchman reigned in the temptation
to solely spend big on a marquee player.
“I can understand the interest in these types of
signings, but it's five per cent of the game,” he said.
“For 95 per cent of the time it's something more -
the spirit inside the club, the values of the club. But
today you feel that it is only about that (big
signings).
“I'm not against splashing out, but football is not
only about that.
“(But) many players want to join us and all the
players who have been here want to come back
here. It’s not because they like my face.
“They want to come here because of the way we
treat people and for the football we play, or try to
play. Unfortunately we’ve not always managed to
do it, but they find something here they want to
know again.
“So when they go somewhere else and many,
many, many players, believe me, ask me to come
back. They all want to come back. I don’t know if it
is Arsenal or England, but there is something about
it.”
Jens Lehmann, Sol Campbell and Thierry Henry have
all enjoyed second spells at Arsenal after initial
glories under Wenger’s command and now it seems
as if Mathieu Flamini will be the next to indulge in a
Gunners comeback as he edges closer to securing a
deal with the north London club.
Flamini left in less than harmonious circumstances
back in 2008, but Wenger seems open to the
prospect of him re-signing for the club in the coming
days after watching him train with his first team
squad.
“He works very hard, he has always been a very
dedicated player. He has the required (fitness) level.
He doesn’t come from a small club. He has played
here, and in Milan, and in Marseille.”
“Does he (Flamini) regret leaving? You should ask
him this question, it would be better. I didn’t ask him
that. Would he be ready to come back here?
Certainly, yes.”
Information from the Press Association was used in
this report.
